Set the format for the longitude and latitude reading. Most geocaches are written in the Degrees, Minutes format (for example N39 34.852’- 39 degrees, 34.852 minutes). This would be a good format for your device.
Go to the Setup menu.
Choose Position Format.
Choose the top choice in the next menu, Position Format.
What does the latitude measurement N39 34.852’ mean on a map? (visit Reading Coordinates if you need help.)
What does the longitude measurement W91 44.920’ mean on a map?
Choose the Satellite button to enter the Satellite screen.
With the satellite screen on, walk North – how do the longitude and latitude settings change? (You may need to be outside for the device to connect to available satellites.)
Walk South – how do the longitude and latitude settings change?
Walk East - how do the longitude and latitude settings change?
Walk West - how do the longitude and latitude settings change?
Advanced Map Skills – adding maps from Garmin Basecamp can be found on eTrex22/32 How To Guide
Time: 24:14 – 25:10: Adding an external GPX guide map file to your Garmin. These files can be found on sites such as the hikingguy.com or All Trails. To do this you will plug your Garmin into your computer to add a downloaded file. This is an advanced skill that you may or may not want to use.
Time: 25:10 – 29:58: Using Garmin Basecamp – You can create waypoints, routes, and tracks, in free maps found on Garmin Basecamp and then add them to your Garmin. This is definitely an advanced skill that you may want to try after you have used your Garmin for a while.
Mark Waypoint Menu Resources to help you understand the Mark Waypoint Menu:
Time: 20:13 – 21:10: Waypoints – Waypoints mark a location and store it on your Garmin. Once you mark a waypoint and give it a name, you can then move to a new location and use the waypoint to navigate to that point. You can navigate to a waypoint using the Where To?, Waypoints, or WayPoint Manager menus. In the Advanced GPS module, you will learn to download waypoints and add them to Google Maps. You and your students can then add photos, video and text about this location to the Google Map. This can be a valuable tool in communicating about projects that involve outdoor locations.
Where To? Menu Resources to help you understand the Where To? menu:
What are the choices for locations in the Where To? menu?
Use the Where To? menu to find a route to the nearest fast food restaurant.
Use the Where To? menu to find a marked waypoint
Compass Menu This video will give you basic information about using the compass: How to Use the Compass Page. One thing to notice, the compass is not electronic in the eTrex 22X. This means you must be moving before it will give you a reading.
The compass can be used for 2 purposes: determining which direction you are moving as you walk and to point to the direction of a waypoint set in your Garmin. See Compass Navigation to help you set the compass for these two purposes.
Geocaches Menu Geocaching is a GPS-based international treasure hunt. A cache is hidden at specific geographic location that is posted on Geocache.com. The location coordinates can be downloaded from the website into your Garmin, which can then be used to navigate to the hidden geocache location.
